ICEMULE was born out of necessity when our founder, James Collie, set out on a hike in Virginia with a simple goal—to keep his drinks cold without carrying a bulky, hard-sided cooler. Struggling to find the right solution, he improvised by wrapping ice and drinks in a regular backpack. The result? A leaky, soggy mess—but also the spark of an idea.

Every ICEMULE cooler is built tough for outdoor conditions. The exterior and interior layers are made from our proprietary MuleSkin™ fabric, a heavy-duty dual-layer tarpaulin material that’s 2X thicker than most soft coolers. This creates a rugged shell that resists tears and abrasions (and looks pretty cool, too). Between those layers is PolarLayer™ foam insulation, which helps keep contents cold for 24+ hours. All seams are fully welded (no stitching), so they’re leak-proof, and the roll-top closure forms an airtight seal – meaning no zippers to break or leak. Padded straps use durable nylon webbing, and many models feature additional air mesh padding for comfort. In short, ICEMULE uses high-quality, adventure-ready materials – the same kind you’d find in whitewater dry bags or outdoor gear – to ensure your cooler can handle sun, sand, water, and rough handling for years

Absolutely – ICEMULE coolers are 100% waterproof when properly closed. They’re designed like dry bags, with welded seams and a roll-top closure instead of leaky zippers. This means you can literally fill them with ice and water and they won’t leak, and outside water (rain or waves) won’t get in either. Many of our customers take them kayaking, tubing, fishing, and boating without a worry. In fact, ICEMULEs even float if they end up in the water – so your drinks are safe during that paddleboard spill! Just be sure to fold and clip the roll-top closed correctly, and you’ve got a completely waterproof, floating cooler by your side.

ICEMULE coolers are engineered to keep ice frozen for up to 24 hours in real-world conditions. That means you can pack in cold ones in the morning and still have ice by the end of a full day of hiking, beach lounging, or tailgating. All the standard ICEMULE models – from the Classic to the Jaunt to the Pro – will retain ice for about 24 hours when you’ve packed them with a recommended 2:1 ice-to-contents ratio and kept the cooler closed as much as possible. Some of our specialized models can go even longer: the ICEMULE Urbano can keep ice up to 48 hours, and the ICEMULE BOSS can keep things cold for multiple days. Keep in mind that ice retention also depends on external factors like ambient temperature, direct sun, and how often you open the cooler. For best results, start with pre-chilled drinks and use plenty of ice. But generally speaking, you can count on all-day chillness from your ICEMULE – and then some!

Quick Clean (Everyday Use)

Give it a good rinse with warm water and mild soap—especially if you’ve been near saltwater or spilled something sticky.

Wipe it down with a soft towel or sponge (no need to scrub hard—our MuleSkin™ fabric is tough).

Let it air dry completely with the top open before rolling it up and storing.

Deep Clean (For the “Oops, I Forgot It in the Car for a Week” Moments)

Baking Soda Buff: Sprinkle a little baking soda on a clean towel and gently rub the cooler to remove debris and odors.

Vinegar Shine: Mix 1 part vinegar, 2 parts water, and a couple tablespoons of Murphy’s Oil Soap. Soak a towel in the mix and wipe down the cooler—inside and out. Follow with a rinse using a clean, damp towel.

Spot Cleaning Pro Hack: Got a stubborn stain? Make a baking soda paste using 3 parts baking soda, 1 part water, and a few drops of dish soap. Apply it to the spot, scrub with a soft cloth, then wipe off the residue with warm water.
